When I began making black and white photographs a decade ago, I continued also to paint, but I more or less stopped drawing and painting on paper. It had been very interesting to see the connections between my (abstract) painting and my photography and being curious, I started drawing again, partly because I missed it but also to see what effects my photography might have on that medium. For me, shooting film and drawing both involve intense looking; seeing light, dark and the gradations between them; composing; changing focus; playing with visibility; distinguishing and obscuring figure, ground and spacial relationships...often over a long time.

Printing in the darkroom, I alter negative and positive space, build up contrast and tone, dodging (erasing), burning (saturating) and cropping. The images in my drawings emerge in a similar way.
