JO LEVY A Family Affair
Please click images above for full view.
Jo Levy was a student of William Zorach at the Art Students League and an assistant in Alexandre Archipenko's New York atelier in the 1920s. Along with Hantman she was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) artist in the 1930s. Together they were activists for the rights of artists and promoters of art for the public good. Their apartment was a gathering place for artists, intellectuals and musicians who debated and rallied for the cause. For the WPA, Jo Levy was commissioned to do a bas-relief for the Department of Labor in Washington DC. Her sculpture, mostly abstracted natural forms, has been described as highly refined, sensual and graceful. The work in this exhibit is small scale and includes pieces in bronze, wood, and marble.
