Before any kind of written language, pictures were used to communicate, and striped of meaning, broken down to their simplest form, they are just marks. Like a pixilated image that only makes sense when the viewer steps back, I enjoy making art that makes a quick visual impact. It is fine for the viewer to take away any kind of interpretation but I don't begin with any kind of message or agenda; it is more for me about the enjoyment of color and pattern. Like a point of light or star on a map, a dot creates a focal point. Many dots create a work that hopefully brings the eye all over the image. The body of my work is varied, focusing on many different ways of constructing "canvas": from wood strips, mounted on masonite panel or pine frame, to stitched drop clothes, and panel, exploring what a "painting" is. I've done a lot of mixed media pieces exploring color, geometric pattern, and also disorganization of the pattern through ink and charcoal drawing, as well as acrylic and oil washes.
What drew me to this particular canvas of using book covers was the interesting surface texture, though in the finished product, something might be found in the connection of the simple forms and dots, almost pre-language, placed on top of a book, and the actual content of the written words inside the book that has been glued shut.
