THE BIGGEST DRAWING IN THE STATE OF MAINE

hundred feet in length wraps the entire front and rear gallery space

The drawing was begun at a summer session at Haystack Mountain School for Crafts on Deer Isle. The process proved so compelling that even when the session ended the drawing continued to grow daily in the artist's Portland studio and will continue until the start of the exhibitÉpossibly beyond. Relying on a simple process of repeatedly drawing parallel, vertical lines until the loaded brush runs completely dry, the work culminates in up to a half dozen layers of various dilution of Sumi, and occasionally Walnut, ink. Larry Hayden has more recently been known for his classically rendered graphite portraits and figure drawings. While seemingly a departure, the BIG DRAWING in fact harks back to virtually forgotten earlier work.

Larry Hayden has resided and exhibited in Maine since 1979. His work has been included in the "All Maine Biennial," numerous shows at Maine Coast Artists Gallery as well as the landmark exhibition, "On The Edge, 40 Years of Painting in Maine." Larry Hayden's work is included in Design Language, by Tim McCreight and in Intuition Painting, by Dean Nimmer. A forthcoming book Abstract Painting, by the same author, will feature a section devoted to Larry Hayden's latest work and his approach to abstract painting. His work is held in the collections of numerous institutions including the Portland Museum of Art, The Farnsworth Museum of American Art, Colby College Museum of Art, and Bates College Museum of Art.
