NOA WARREN JULY SALON

The surface is simultaneously the foundation of the second dimension and the superficial expression of three-dimensional material. My process explores perceptual distinctions of actual and artificial surfaces, between objects and two-dimensional representations.

These works are based loosely on graph paper which interests me as a tool used to plot and coordinate unreal objects in unreal space. By altering and drawing these sheets as subjects, I am examining them as a pattern used to create perspective; describing the third dimension from the second.

I enjoy this use of the grid as an example of how surfaces can be invented or imagined, almost sculpted, with only lines. I think there is adventure in seeing images in this way, to try to rationalize and recognize their deceit, but on some visceral level still be caught up in their fiction.

I see my work following a long line of artists who's works navigate the emotional and mechanical elements of visual cognition. Recent influences include: Lucio Fontana, Vija Celmins, James Turrell, Gerhard Richter, Toba Khedoori.
