PAT APT High Street Gallery

Like many people, artist Pat Apt had only a glancing awareness of homelessness before a friend became ill and then unemployed and then homeless.
The compelling body of oversize prints in this exhibit is the result of her anger and frustration on learning the enormity of the problem and that it could exist within the affluence of a rich and powerful nation. As an artist she used the only language she has to express her rage. The prints, black ink on brown wrapping paper, are as stark and severe as the subject matter. Pat Apt pulls no punches with this direct, honest and frankly disturbing work. The strength of her message is matched by her skill as a printmaker.
A percentage of proceeds from this work were donated to Preble Street, a Portland organization that has, for 30 years, fought tirelessly for the rights and dignity of homeless people. Four hundred people rely every day on the agency for services ranging from shelter, nutritious food (almost 90,000 meals and 160,000 emergency grocery meals a year), clean clothes, and mental health counseling to consumer advocacy and employment services.
