RUTH LIVINGSTON A Family Affair
Please click images above for full view.
Little is known about Ruth Livingston except that she is described by art historians as "a naive painter of authenticity, dedication and considerable accomplishment." The small, exuberant paintings in this exhibit are landscapes with figures, often children, and animals. Her work graced the walls of the Hantman apartment in Manhattan and their house on Monhegan. She was also an early social activist. As a young woman in Pittsburgh, PA she was part of a group that lobbied steel mill owners to reduce smoke pollution by using a gadget that would catch the smoke cinders emitted from chimneys. The group convinced mill owners that they could make a profit by selling by-products such as cinder blocks. It worked and Pittsburgh became virtually free of smoke pollution.
