Susan Prince Thompson is one of 17 artists included in the 2009 Portland Museum of Art Biennial. About her work the artist states: "In my recent work, I have been involved with images of maps and thoughts about mapping. I often relate to maps as storytelling devices and containers of memory. My current drawing process has been a sort of 'exquisite corpse' game that I play by myself, recording streams-of-consciousness, tracing the meanderings of daydreams, and conjuring the unknown. The images evoke a psychological sense of both inner and outer space, as well as a material sense of patched garments and ritual textiles. I enjoy embedding other elements in the drawings, such as coins and mica, to imbue them with extra material qualities such as shininess, weight, and transparency, and to give the pieces an inherent sense of layers of meaning. The sculptural works carry these same ideas into three dimensions, and take on an additional sort of funky, visceral character. In their linear forms, the sculptures retain a direct connection to the drawings, but they bring these ideas to life in a much more physical way."
Susan Prince Thompson has won numerous awards and has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout New England and in Philadelphia, Hawaii and California. She is a graduate of Antioch College and received a BA and an MFA from San Francisco State University. This is her third exhibit at Fitzpatrick.
